Open Access Resources

This is a new trend which is being practised and used in many areas inthe world. This trend is called “Open Access Journals and Databases”. This is the simplest way where the public may access the journals or databases in full content freely and in most cases downloadable or for which otherwise specified.

1. Affordable Learning @ Louis

Through our Affordable Learning LOUISiana initiative, LOUIS partners with libraries and faculty to save students money on education by reducing the costs of instructional materials through the use of Affordable Education Resources (AERs), Open Educational Resources (OERs), and other open access materials. This also ensures that students have equitable access to course materials on the first day of class.

2. Annals Academic of Medicine Singapore

The Annals is the official medical journal of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. It is a refereed monthly journal appearing in the Index Medicus and has been accepted in the Science Citation Index-Expanded, ISI Alerting Services, and Current Contents®/Clinical Medicine. Subject: medicine.

3. BASE

BASE is one of the world’s most voluminous search engines, especially for academic web resources. BASE provides more than 240 million documents from more than 8,000 content providers. You can access the full texts of about 60% of the indexed documents for free (Open Access). BASE is operated by Bielefeld University Library. Subject: multi-disciplinary.

4. BC Open Collection

The B.C. Open Collection is a curated selection of open educational resources (OER) that can be accessed by educators in B.C. and beyond for use in the classroom, in an institutional learning management system, or on other teaching and learning platforms. All materials are openly licensed, allowing them to be freely used, customized, and shared. Included in the collection are courses and textbooks, with new resources being added continuously.

5. Bioline International

Bioline International is a pioneer in the provision of open access to peer-reviewed bioscience journals published in developing countries. These journals contain timely research on public health, international development, tropical medicine, food and nutritional security, and biodiversity. Bioline increases the visibility of this research by making it readily available to researchers across the world. Subject: bioscience.

6. Bookboon.com

Bookboon is one of the largest publishers of open source textbooks with hundreds of titles available. Their books are all free and able to be downloaded as PDFs. They fund their titles with limited employer brand advertisements. Their books are not customizable but are open access. Bookboon also makes titles available to a global audience.

7. Cambridge Digital Library’s Islamic Manuscript

The Cambridge Digital Library will draw together books, manuscripts and other items from across our collections that are especially significant. Many of them have been displayed in Library exhibitions in the past – now they can be accessed at any time, from anywhere in the world, and browsed cover to cover exhibitions in the past. 8. City Journal (Magazine)

City Journal offers a stimulating mix of hard-headed practicality and cutting-edge theory, with articles on everything from school financing, policing strategy, and welfare policy to urban architecture, family policy, and the latest theorizing emanating from the law schools, charitable foundations, even the schools of public health. Subject: urban affairs.

9. College Open Textbooks Collaborative

This initiative has open textbooks that have been adopted by more than 2000 programs. They collect open textbooks from a variety of colleges and universities. They wish to raise awareness of the availability of free, open textbooks and increase the adoption of those books by two-year programs. You can browse their catalog by subject or by viewing recommended books

10. CORE: Connecting Repositories

CORE harvests research papers from data providers from all over the world including institutional and subject repositories, open access and hybrid journal publishers. Subject: multi-disciplinary.

11. Dart Europe E-Theses Portal

The DART-Europe partners help to provide researchers with a single European Portal for the discovery of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs). Subject: multi-disciplinary.

12. DOAJ: Directory of Open Access Journals

DOAJ is a community-curated list of open access journals and aims to be the starting point for all information searches for quality, peer-reviewed open access material. The database contains 12000 open access journals covering all areas of science, technology, medicine, social science and humanities. Subject: multi-disciplinary.

13. ERIC: Education Resources Information Center

Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) is a comprehensive, easy-to-use, searchable, Internet-based bibliographic and full-text database of education research and information. The ERIC website is offered free for public use by the Institute of Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education. Subject: education.

14. E-LIS: E-Prints in Library and Information Science

E-LIS is an open access archive for scientific or technical documents, published or unpublished, on Librarianship, Information Science & Technology, and related areas. E-LIS is based on the voluntary work of an international team of librarians. Subject: library science.

15. Free Medical Journals

The Free Medical Journals Site is dedicated to the promotion of free access to medical journals over the Internet Subject: medicine.

16. Global Text Project Books

Affiliated with the Saylor Foundation, the Global Text Project is an initiative originally funded by the Jacobs Foundation and dedicated to providing freely accessible textbooks to students all over the world. They have information on their site for authors who wish to submit their textbooks to be used for their courses. All books on the site are released under a Creative Commons license. Individual chapters are available and can be edited by instructors to suit the needs of their course.

17. Harvard Design Magazine

Harvard Design Magazine aims to provide a forum for practitioners, journalists and academics primarily architecture, landscape architecture and urban and design planning. Subject: architecture, landscape architecture, and urban and design planning.

18. HBCU Affordable Learning

The HBCU Affordable Learning Solutions (AL$) Community Portal provides any HBCU with free access to the tools, technologies, and some services needed to initiate their own AL$ program and learn from their HBCU colleagues. To become a MERLOT partner and collaboratively develop a customized HBCU AL$ portal, inquiries are welcome.

19. IIUM Journals

IIUM Journal Publication is the publishing arm of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). IIUM promotes research and education by efficiently coordinating the publication of research projects; maintaining strategic alliances with distributors and other publishers, and regularly participating in book exhibitions and sales. Subject: multi-disciplinary.

20. Indian Journal of Urology

Indian Journal of Urology-IJU (ISSN 0970-1591) is the official publication of the Urological Society of India. The journal is published quarterly. Subject: medicine – urology.

21. Information Research

Information Research, is open access, international, scholarly journal, dedicated to making accessible the results of research across a wide range of information-related disciplines. Subject: information science, information management, information systems, information policy, archives and records management and librarianship.

22. International Food Research Journal

International Food Research Journal (IFRJ), published six (6) times a year, is an open-access, double-blinded peer-reviewed online journal under the category of food science and technology. Subject: food science and technology.

23. International Young Scholar Journal of Language (IYSJL)

International Young Scholar Journal of Language (IYSJL) is an online, peer-reviewed biannual journal. The journal aims to provide an avenue for young scholars to publish their research work and to share their findings or insights with other young scholars, academicians and practitioners. 24. J-STAGE

J-STAGE is an electronic journal platform for science and technology information in Japan, developed and managed by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Subject: science and technology.

25. LibreTexts

LibreTexts is the adaptable, user-friendly non-profit open education resource platform that educators trust for creating, customizing, and sharing accessible, interactive textbooks, adaptive homework, and ancillary materials. Collaboration is fostered with individuals and organizations to champion open education initiatives, support institutional publishing programs, drive curriculum development projects, and more.

26. Malaysian Citation Index

Delivering access to bibliographic and citation information from scholarly literature published in Malaysian journals, conference proceedings, chapters in books and theses in the sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences and the humanities. Subject: multi-disciplinary.

27. Medical Journal of Malaysia

Published in 1890 this journal originated as the Journal of the Straits Medical Association. With the formation of the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), the Journal became the official organ, supervised by an editorial board. Some of the early Hon. Editors were Mr. H.M. McGladdery (1960 – 1964), Dr. A.A. Sandosham (1965 – 1977), and Prof. Paul C.Y. Chen (1977 – 1987). Subject: medicine.

28. Milne Open Textbooks

Milne Library Publishing at SUNY Geneseo manages and maintains Milne Open Textbooks, a catalog of open textbooks authored and peer-reviewed by SUNY faculty and staff.

29. MOST Commons

The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) Commons is an online space designed to support faculty and staff in discovering materials, collaborating with colleagues, and contributing OER to improve curricula.

30. MyJurnal

MyJurnal contains bibliographic data and full-text contents of articles published in refereed scholarly journals in Malaysia, in various disciplines such as Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Medical & Health Sciences. Subject: multi-disciplinary.

31. National Academies Press

The National Academies Press (NAP) was created by the National Academy of Sciences to publish the reports of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, operating under a charter granted by the Congress of the United States. The NAP publishes more than 200 books a year on a wide range of topics in science, engineering, and medicine, providing authoritative information on important matters in science and health policy. They offer more than 5,000 titles in PDF format. Almost all of these PDFs can be downloaded for free by the chapter or the entire book.

32. National Center for Biotechnology Information

The National Center for Biotechnology Information advances science and health by providing access to biomedical and genomic information. Subject: biomedical and genomic.

33. Open Access Theses and Dissertation

OATD is a resource for finding open access graduate theses and dissertations published around the world. Subject: multi-disciplinary.

34. Open Book Publishers

The leading independent open access publisher of academic research in the Humanities and Social Sciences in the UK, this organization is award-winning, not-for-profit, run by scholars, and committed to making high-quality research freely available to readers around the world. All books can be accessed online or downloaded for free, with no Book Processing Charges (BPCs) for authors.

35. Open Culture Textbooks

Open Culture is a site, founded in 2006, dedicated to collecting links to free educational and cultural media for the general public. Their editorial board includes several teachers and academics. While this link goes directly to their list of free textbooks, they also provide information on free online courses, audio books, movies, language learning resources, and ebooks.

36. Openstax CNX

OpenStax believes that everyone has something to learn, and everyone has something to teach. Frustrated by the limitations of traditional textbooks and courses, Dr. Richard Baraniuk founded OpenStax (then Connexions) in 1999 at Rice University to provide authors and learners with an open space where they can share and freely adapt educational materials such as courses, books, and reports. Today, OpenStax CNX is a dynamic non-profit digital ecosystem serving millions of users per month in the delivery of educational content to improve learning outcomes. There are tens of thousands of learning objects, called pages, that are organized into thousands of textbook-style books in a host of disciplines, all easily accessible online and downloadable to almost any device, anywhere, anytime. The best part? Everything is available for free thanks to generous support from Rice University and several philanthropic organizations.

37. Openstax College

Openstax is an initiative started by Rice University. They aim to improve free student access to quality textbooks. In order to accomplish this, they encourage instructors to customize the available texts, try out chapters of them in their classes, and hopefully adopt them. Anyone can browse their textbook selection and read a title that is of interest.

38. Open Textbook Library

In partnership with many colleges and universities, the Open Textbook Library licenses textbook to make them available for free to students and faculty. You can browse their titles by subject or search for particular books.

39. Open Textbook Library (The Internet Archive)

The Internet Archive, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, free access is provided to researchers, historians, scholars, people with print disabilities, and the general public. The mission is to provide Universal Access to All Knowledge.

40. PATENTSCOPE® Search Service

The PATENTSCOPE database provides access to international Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications in full-text format on the day of publication, as well as to patent documents of participating national and regional patent offices. Subject: patent

41. Royal Society Open Science

A fast, open journal publishing high-quality research across all of science, engineering and mathematics. Subject: science, engineering and mathematics.

42. Saylor Foundation Books

The Saylor Foundation is part of the Open Educational Resources community. They provide free, online, non-degree courses in a variety of subjects. Their textbooks are also available to use for free online

43. ScienceOpen

ScienceOpen is a freely accessible research platform that offers millions of open access articles across all scientific disciplines. It supports advanced search, article recommendations, and tools for researchers to share, review, and promote their work. A useful resource for students, academics, and researchers.

44. Shamaa Arab Educational Information Network

Shamaa provides free access to educational research produced in Arab countries, including journal articles, theses, and reports. The platform covers topics in education and related fields in Arabic, English, and French. It is a valuable resource for researchers, educators, and students interested in education in the Arab world.

45. Singapore Medical Journal

The Singapore Medical Journal (SMJ) is the monthly publication of the Singapore Medical Association (SMA). The Journal aims to advance medical practice and clinical research by publishing high-quality articles that add to the clinical knowledge of physicians in Singapore and worldwide. Subject: medicine.

46. The Southeast Asian Journal of Tropical Medicine and Public Health
